Findings & Charms for Jewelry: Materials and Inspiration

In this article I’ll be talking about the various jewelry findings and charms associated with clay jewelry. There are many different kinds to choose from, and I’ll show you my favorites and the ones I prefer, let’s get started!

Jewelry Findings

There are a variety of jewelry findings, which lucky for us allows for creativity and variety among jewelry pieces. Some of the most common materials for jewelry findings include:

  • Stainless steel
  • Sterling Silver
  • Titanium
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • White gold
  • 14K or 18K Gold
  • Gold plated stainless steel

For most of my jewelry I use either 14k gold or 18k gold plated stainless steel. I love the look and elegance of gold, but solid gold or gold filled findings are expensive and hard to find. Gold plated stainless steel is also hypoallergenic, and perfect for ear sensitivity. I personally have very sensative ears and skin, and so the wearability of jewelry is very important to me when I’m making it with others in mind.

I would like to expand my jewelry findings to include stainless steel for those who prefer a silver look. Again, sterling silver, just like solid gold, is expensive and difficult to find, so stainless steel is an excellant, hypoallergenic option.

Copper and brass jewelry findings are often used in costume jewelry, or jewelry with a specific look in mind. The colors and themes of these jewelry findings can be fun to wear and are cheaper than silver and gold, however, they are usually mixed alloys. This means they contain at least 60% of either copper or brass, and the rest is “filler” metals, including aluminum and nickel.

Jewelry Charms

I love to use charms and beads in my jewelry along with polymer clay. They add variety and uniqueness to clay jewelry. They often add to my creativity when making jewelry and i always love how shiny and sparkly they are. Some of my favorite charms are pictured below.

Some of my favorite pieces include those with gold plated brass charms, or cubic zirconia charms. Unlike brass alloy jewelry findings, gold plated brass charms are still hypoallergenic, and if polished regularly, their shine will last for years to come!

Cubic Zirconia charms are some of my favorites to use for bridal earrings, or earrings that are simply more understated and elegant.
